What is the Consumer Price Index?
Each month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys prices for a "market basket" of goods and services, including food, clothing, energy, new car costs, etc. The prices are then plugged into formulas that weigh each price based on how much of the "average" consumer's budget is spent on each particular item. This economic "snapshot" of the average consumer's spending is known as the Consumer Price Index (CPI). It is a commonly used measure of inflation.
